Stony Brook Friends Meetinghouse
Adjacent to the Park, about a 2 minute walk from the Clarke House, is the still active Friends Meetinghouse. Engraved stones in the front of the building indicate it was built in 1726 and rebuilt in1760, following a fire.
On 10 acres of land deeded by Benjamin Clarke, this meetinghouse was occupied by British troops and later sheltered wounded from the battle. The graveyard beside the meetinghouse contains many unmarked graves of local Quakers as well as soldiers killed in the battle.
The unmarked grave of Richard Stockton, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, is located in this cemetery. A plaque by the entrance gate commemorates his life.
